This is a very special JP20. The owner of this JP20 knew Joe Pass personally and did interviews with the legendary guitarist. During one performance Joe asked him to come back stage and play his new signature guitar. At first he thought it was a D’Aquisto. Joe saw how much he liked the guitar and offered to get one for his friend. This is the original owner who was vey close to the great Joe Pass.
The JP20 is a full sized16” 25 1/2” scale single cutaway arched spruce top, maple back and sides hollow body electric guitar model introduced in 1982. It is a signature model for American jazz guitarist Joe Pass. It was made in Japan initially by FujiGen production moved to Terada sometime in 1986. The JP20 was the first and only signature guitar made for Pass by Ibanez. three-piece maple neck with a 22-fret ebony fingerboard with binding and pearl and abalone split block position markers. Components include a single Ibanez Super 58 humbuckering pickup, modeled off a D’Aquisto 16” archtop which Pass owned. JYPPPPY, where “J” presumably stands for Joe (Pass), the first and last digit together represent the year of production and the four digits between them are the production sequence for that year.Sometime in mid-1986 production of the JP20 moved from FujiGen to Terada. The Terada serial numbers start with an “H”, followed by a single digit to represent the year, followed by a 5-digit production sequence number. The JP20 was discontinued after 1990.
